On September 20, the first online meeting took place between the mayors of Vinnytsia and Karlsruhe (Germany), the city with which Vinnytsia is currently establishing partnership relations. During the conversation, the representatives of the municipalities discussed the first steps of further cooperation, in particular, student exchanges and internships of young professionals. Vinnytsia Mayor Serhii Morhunov announced this on his Facebook page.
"During the online meeting with my colleague Frank Mentrup, the directions of the educational programs were outlined - spatial development, urban mobility, creative industries and tourism. The best practices of community development will be relevant for the post-war recovery," Serhii Morhunov said.
The Mayor of Karlsruhe, Frank Mentrup, emphasized that twinning between cities is necessary in order to ensure peace, destroy prejudices and build a common future in Europe.
"Karlsruhe has many sister cities, contacts with which arose after the Second World War in the 1950s and 1960s. This is a partnership with states that arose after the fall of the Iron Curtain, after the Eastern Bloc countries gained independence. Therefore, we know the value of partnerships between cities and have always sought to create conditions for direct contact between people, particularly students, within the framework of joint partnership programs. Moreover, not only bilaterally, we are interested in creating a whole network of partner exchanges where people could communicate with each other," he said.
The leader of Vinnytsia thanked the German people for their comprehensive help and concern for what is happening in Ukraine.
"German partners understand the challenges facing not only Ukraine, but all of Europe. It was with words of support and solidarity that Frank Mentrup started our meeting. Karlsruhe has been helping Ukrainians since the first days of the russian invasion. This is very valuable to us. And it is important that our communities are determined for a long-term partnership", emphasized Serhii Morhunov.
We will remind you that back in the summer, the Municipal Council of the German city of Karlsruhe unanimously approved the decision to establish friendly contacts. The city considered the corresponding project back in April. Also, Karlsruhe intends to invest about 50,000 euros to strengthen new partnership relations with Vinnytsia. German partners were attracted by the innovativeness and pro-Europeanness of our city, so a twinning agreement is being developed, which will be officially signed by the mayors of Vinnytsia and Karlsruhe.
Meanwhile, another European city, Ventspils, is ready to develop a partnership with Vinnytsia. On September 14, Serhii Morgunov signed the corresponding agreement on the commonwealth with the Latvian city.
